International Winter Games Festival Zimniada-2011

The annual event called Zimniada International Winter Games Festival will start on shores of Lake Baikal at February 19, 2011. This year the grand opening ceremony of Zimniada promises to be a vivid and impressive show. Unlike last year’s on-stage performance Zimniada-2011 grand opening will consist of the live presentation to public of the most spectacular events planned for the festival. These are expected to be snowmobile racing, open-air figure skating performances, sled dog racing, ice-golfing and snow kiting.

The ice castle has already opened in Listvyanka settlement at Lake Baikal shore. This year due to the efforts of Irkutsk regional government the castle is available to public with no admission charge. Today’s Listvyanka ice castle itself is much more magnificent than it used to be before. It features the ice park with magical ice amusements including various slides and rides, mazes and large scale sculptures made entirely of ice.

Zimniada organizational committee will offer familiarization tour to Baikal for representatives of tour operators running Lake Baikal trips and for foreign mass media. Zimniada festival will also include a number of traditional events held annually in February. These are “Baikal Tour” international travel fair, the downhill-skiing championship for “Irkutsk Region Governor’s Cup”, the 7th international ice race at Baikal, Lake Baikal Ice Marathon, the Ice-Fishing Championship “Baikal Kamchatka”.

The grand opening of Zimniada is scheduled on February 19, 2011. “Crystal Nerpa” Ice-Sculpture Festival”, the Downhill-skiing cup at Sobolinaya mountain in Baikalsk and snowmobile racing will start the same day. “Baikal Tour” travel fair will launch on February 17. While the ice-fishing tournament will be held at Maloe More Strait of Baikal only in the beginning of March.

Irkutsk region government will approve and announce the final schedule of Zimniada-2011 at the end of January. Some of the event within the festival will last till April 10, 2011.
